A couple of months ago I made a blog post describing my interest in doing a 3D date game with Unity. While I’m still not 100% convinced I’ll actually finish making one, I have still continued to experiment with what I can do.
Adapting the various locations from the 2D version for use with Unity has (surprisingly) not been that difficult.
I’ve also been lucky in that many of the main locations I use are ones which come with an ‘extended licence’, which means I’m allowed to use them in a 3D game. The main obvious scene which doesn’t is the players apartment, which means the player would need a new home. I finally decided on a mini mansion model, then combined it with two others to create a pool and suburban surrounding.
This is easily my favorite location so far. The lighting and the shadows in particular really make it come alive. As you can see however, it still isn’t quite finished. The house needs more windows, and I’m not keen on all of the textures. Just from these three images though, you can probably get a good impression of how it would look.
One thing I’ve been very aware of when considering a unity game is the gameplay. Yes, the idea of a full 3D environment sounds appealing, but the whole thing would be rather pointless if the gameplay is exactly the same as the 2D version. With this in mind, one thing I’m set on doing is having a decent sized city hub the player can freely explore.
I still don’t have a full list of things for the player to do in the city, but certain location will be accessible from it, such as stores, the pool, and the the strip club.
I’m sure many of you have enjoyed visiting strip clubs in mainstream games such as grand theft auto, and I’m sure many of you will also have been disappointed in the lack of nudity there. For once, you could have a strip club where the ladies showed everything.
Despite these ( and a few other) scenes looking as they are, I’m still a long way away from a game however. At minimum, I would still need to make menus and a dialog engine before I even started making the game content.
Finally, I’m also finding it frustrating finding women I’m allowed to use in unity. As I mentioned earlier, there are some models I’m allowed to use in unity, and some I’m not. Most of my ladies aren’t permitted.
So far, only Maddison, Jennifer, Rachel and Daisy (after I remade her. She has different tattoos now) are clear for use. Lisette could be too, but I would have to give her a new hairstyle.
So, at this point VDGunity is still very much an experiment, but it’s still edging closer to reality.

I don’t understand this all very well… What is the deal with not being able to use your models? Is it that you used too much of stock models and they’re not sufficiently your own creations or something?
It’s along those lines, yes.
You can buy things like characters skins and apply them to your models for the purposes of creating 2D images, but only some allow you to use them as 3D models in a game engine.
Interesting… though I’d still want something to do in the game besides just walking around. Dunno what it could be but yeah
Ideas: Have it be somewhat like Majora’s mask in that you have, let’s say a week time frame, in which each girl has a certain pattern and place she’d be in each time. Like, 10 a.m. on a Friday, she’d be at work. And then you wouldn’t be able to go see her whenever, you’d need to adjust to her schedule
Each girl has their own stats like level of interest and whatnot. Reaching certain stages in a relationship needs a certain level of interest and whatnot.
Girls react differently. For instance, Rachel would be cool with whatever, but asking a shy girl to go to a strip club wouldn’t be an easy feat.
Jealousy. Again, Rachel would be down for whatever, but being able to go around and dating every girl without any repercussions wouldn’t be so easy. Have each girl have their own attraction stat for every other girl. So, in order to get a threesome, you’d need to manage the stats for both girls so that they don’t hate each other but also wouldn’t be jealous of one another.
Keeping with the in game clock, have it so that going up to random strangers at the wrong time brings you down. Like, if a girl is a clerk at a store, and you talk to her about stuff you shouldn’t at a job, your score goes down.
I know this would be tough, but having scenes for various events would be awesome. Like, if you are flirting with, say, Kelly, and then you take Jennifer on a date to the store Kelly works out, then there would be a reaction scene. Lots of writing, I know, but I think it’d be worth it.
So yeah, my basic ideas lol. Think it’d make it better especially the in game clock, but whatever you decide :p
I was actually checking the blog thinking if you were ever going to follow through with this idea. I’d love to hear more about it and the type of gameplay that we would see. Should definitely keep us updated 🙂
Maybe you should make the different areas selectable by a simple map instead of a full world, at least for the first game made like this. Having a full open world can cause a lot of problems, and I think in a game like this (finding things to interact with) a big world won’t be suited without a very large amount of development time. Even the massive game companies fail a lot of the time making open world games.
Formal request to make a game where you date a black girl… not like Naria or the scifi girl who are just there as side content. Would definitely pay for a month for something new like that
Nice it’s step to more interactive game.
You have the option in the latest games to chose the gender and skin color of your player, maybe to something similar for the main character.
IRL I work as a Unity Dev. I would be interested in helping you turn this into a reality if you’d like.
